PDRN vs exosomes vs PRP: which regenerative add-on for microneedling.

6 min de lectura

Microneedling opens the channels. What goes into them decides whether the session resurfaces or regenerates. Here is how the three common add-ons compare.

TANOVA AESTHETICS is a single-practitioner clinical skin studio at 2100 E Hallandale Beach Blvd, Unit 201, Hallandale Beach, FL 33009, led by Tatiana. The studio's main regenerative course is microneedling with PDRN: a 75-minute session, run as a course of three sessions about three weeks apart, with photographs under fixed studio light at every visit. Microneedling with exosomes is also on the menu. PRP is not, because it needs a blood draw. Patients ask about all three, so this article explains what each add-on is, what the published evidence supports, and how the studio chooses between PDRN and exosomes.

What the add-on is for

Microneedling on its own is a resurfacing procedure. Fine needles open vertical channels in the dermis at a chosen depth, the body reads each channel as a small injury, and over six to twelve weeks new collagen and elastin are laid down.

The add-on is the substance applied during and immediately after the pass, while the channels are open. Its job is to change the quality of the repair: faster, more even, more collagen per session, less inflammation.

PDRN

PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide. It is a chain of DNA fragments purified from salmon, chosen because the sequence is close enough to human DNA to be read by human cells without an immune reaction. PDRN binds adenosine A2A receptors on fibroblasts, which pushes those cells to divide, increases new capillary formation, and damps inflammatory signaling.

It is a pharmaceutical-grade product with a fixed concentration, so session three can be planned from what session one did. PDRN has decades of use in wound care and orthopedics and a growing body of aesthetic studies showing gains in dermal density and scar depth when paired with microneedling.

Exosomes

Exosomes are tiny vesicles released by cells, carrying proteins and RNA that act as messages between cells. The theory: apply a concentrate of these messengers to open channels and the skin repairs itself with the signaling profile of young tissue.

The practice is murkier. Exosome products sold to clinics come from cultured human cells, animal cells, or plants, and the content varies by manufacturer and by batch. No exosome product is FDA-approved as a drug, and the FDA has warned consumers about unapproved exosome products marketed for injection. Exosome serums used on the skin after microneedling are sold as cosmetics. The studies that exist are small and short.

At Tanova, exosomes are applied topically as a serum after microneedling, never injected. We talk through the limits of the evidence at the consultation, and some patients choose exosomes after that conversation, often because they want to try a different serum after a PDRN course.

PRP

PRP is platelet-rich plasma. A tube of your own blood is drawn, spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, and the plasma is applied to the channels or injected. Platelets release growth factors when activated, and those growth factors recruit fibroblasts and stimulate repair.

PRP is legitimate and widely used, and because the material is your own there is no allergy risk. The weakness is variability. Platelet count and growth factor content depend on the patient that day: hydration, sleep, medication, the centrifuge protocol. Session one and session three can deliver different doses. It also requires a blood draw, which adds time and puts some patients off.

For a single session, PRP and PDRN are both credible. For a staged course where the practitioner wants to compare week four against week twelve and adjust, the fixed dose of PDRN makes the comparison honest.

How the three compare in practice

Predictability: PDRN is standardized, PRP varies with the patient, exosomes vary with the manufacturer.

Evidence: PDRN and PRP both have peer-reviewed support for skin regeneration. Exosome evidence in aesthetics is thin and early.

Regulatory standing: PDRN is a pharmaceutical-grade product; PRP is your own tissue; no exosome product is FDA-approved, and topical exosome serums are sold as cosmetics.

Why PDRN is the main course

The practice is built on staged courses and photographs under fixed light. That model only works when the variable from visit to visit is the skin, not the serum. PDRN gives a fixed input, so a change at week twelve can be credited to the protocol and the plan can be adjusted with confidence.

It also fits the cases we see most in Hallandale Beach, Aventura, and Sunny Isles: post-acne marks, early loss of density, and texture in patients who want a regenerative route before considering injectables. A standard course is three sessions about three weeks apart, sometimes alternated with BioRePeel, with a home protocol from SkinCeuticals or iS Clinical in between.

Frequently asked questions

Does Tanova offer exosome or PRP microneedling?

Exosomes, yes. TANOVA AESTHETICS in Hallandale Beach performs microneedling on its own, with PDRN and with an exosome serum. PRP is not offered, because it requires drawing blood; it is a valid protocol in a medical practice.

Is PDRN better than PRP?

Both have published support. PDRN delivers a fixed dose, so results are more predictable across a course. PRP uses your own blood and its growth factor content varies day to day. For a staged plan, PDRN is the more controllable choice.

How many PDRN microneedling sessions are needed?

The main course is three sessions about three weeks apart, each about 75 minutes. Structural change shows from week six onward and continues to mature after the final session.
